Discover Cap Ferret on vacation

Who hasn’t heard of Cap Ferret in Gironde? It’s a popular destination for holidaymakers who appreciate this unspoilt, unspoilt corner of paradise. During your stay at the campsite, discover the Cap-Ferret lighthouse, its beaches, its forest, its oyster beds and its breathtaking view of the Dune du Pilat.

Discover La Teste de Buch

Listed as a historic monument in 2009, the lighthouse is a must-see in Cap-Ferret. A landmark marking the entrance to the Arcachon Basin, the lighthouse ensures maritime safety, but not only that. At 57 metres high, it also offers a superb panorama between land and ocean. Visits are from 10am to 7:30pm in high season (July and August) and from 10am to 12:30pm and 2pm to 6:30pm in April, May, June and September.

Inside the lighthouse, a number of exhibits, some of them interactive, explain the history of the lighthouse, how it works, navigation methods, the marine landscape and much more.

You’ll enter the lower gallery, with its mosaics and statues, the map room, to discover the evolution of cartography over the centuries, and the navigation room, with its fun applications and quizzes for family learning.

The highlight of the visit is the climb to the top of the Cap Ferret lighthouse, with 244 steps to climb, offering a remarkable view of the ocean, the Pilat Dune, the Banc d’Arguin and Bird Island.

The blockhouse at the foot of the lighthouse is open to visitors and hosts exhibitions. In 2023, discover the life of Augustin Fresnel, inventor of the lens that bears his name, through the “From Shadow to Light” exhibition.

The beaches of Cap Ferret

Cap Ferret boasts 25 kilometers of Atlantic coastline and a dozen beaches. One of these is Plage de l’Horizon, also known as Plage du Petit Train, in the heart of the village. It’s the family beach par excellence, bringing locals and holidaymakers together. It’s easy to get to, with numerous surf schools and shops nearby.

Nearby Plage des Dunes is less frequented, as it is more difficult to access, since you have to cross the dune to get there. Caution is also advised, as swimming is unsupervised and the ocean is dangerous. On the other hand, this beach is ideal for a quiet stroll and for admiring the view of the Pointe du Cap.

The Truc Vert beach is the closest to the campsite (71 km / 1h10 approx.). Parking is easy thanks to a large parking lot nearby. Swimming is supervised in summer. With its fine sand, waves and pine forest, this beach is ideal for relaxing, surfing and enjoying all the pleasures of the water.

On the other hand, Plage de la Pointe, or Plage du Phare, is the furthest from the campsite, at 82 kilometers, or around 1h10 by car. At present, the beach is inaccessible to preserve the site. It does, however, offer superb views of the Dune du Pilat and magnificent sunsets.

Please note: all Cap-Ferret beaches have fine sand and dogs are not allowed.
